I Heart Market

So excited starting a stand at the I Heart Market in September.
This will be a great platform for all the Dut Jewelery students.

Dut Strike 2011

Okay...so the students are on a strike AGAIN. This time it is apparently for their book allowances to be increased, the current security company to be fired and cleaning services to be improved. They also want wireless Internet zones in residences, financial aid for first years and financial aid for BTech students, improved food and branded condoms to be made available at the university.
I wanted to see how many of these thing I could relate to, being a 2nd year Dut student myself.
We get a book allowance? Never even knew that.
I go to city campus which is on the outskirts of Durbans CBD...not exactly the place you want to be, although we are in dodgeville we get to experience and see parts of Durban that many people don't get to see. It opens our eyes to a whole new world. When I tell people that we go to Victoria street market and the muthi market they look at me like I am slightly crazy but hey, at least I know whats out there and get to experience Durban to its full potential. So a bit off topic...Security, we do have problems with security outside the campus but as far as I know nothing inside the campus.
We have the most amazing cleaning lady ever, always friendly with a smile and sorting everything out, and when we did have a problem with the bathrooms smelling it got sorted out very quickly.
Why should there be wireless Internet zones in residences? We have computers at Tech with internet. If there is anything we have to do at Tech and there aren't facilities at home we just stay at Tech later the departments are open late with 24 hour security around the building.
Okay the financial aid I have a problem with in general, people always moaning about it and how they battle so much and can't pay their Tech fees...boo-hoo. Here's a little suggestion for you..... why don't you get a JOB??? I wait tables and pay for my fees, I don't want a hand out from anyone so I know when I get my diploma I earned it. If the Tech gives financial aid to all first years and all BTech students how will you get your wireless internet and new security company exactly?
I would agree with the improvement of food, the food at our campus is absolutely revolting, occasionally we get little extras with our meals like hair, string and maggots. Yum-Yum.
Okay, condoms there are condoms available at Tech and if you go to the nurse I'm sure she will give you how ever many you want...oh but you not complaining about there being condoms or not...you want branded condoms. If you want name brand condoms why don't you go and buy them? Just an idea...wait you probably can't afford them, my suggestion is don't have sex.

So I agree with 1 item that this whole giant strike is about. But it is definitely not something I feel so strongly about that I don't want to go to Tech, I just get lunch before I go.
Please would someone tell me why all my money that I work so hard to earn should go down the drain and get wasted just because there are people out there that are too lazy to get a job and pay for their own fees?

Electrolytic Copper Etching

This week we started Etching...so much fun!
The technique we used was Electrolytic Copper Etching.
It is so simple and effective. I can see myself using this technique in many other projects.

Signet Ring

1st Silver piece of work SOLD!!!
The theme for this project was to make our own signet ring, I chose to do polka dots because I wanted to put a young twist on signet rings. I created this ring out of wax which I hand carved and then cast it in sterling silver using the method of last wax casting.

Pendant

This is a Vet Kat inspired Pendant on a beaded necklace.

Brooch

This is a lost wax cast brooch which was inspired by Vet Kat drawings.

More Bottle Caps

Ethiopian Cross

This was our 1st year end of year exam.
We had to make a Ethiopian Cross with a twist.
I decided to add colour to mine with the use of stitching because of the colourful clothes the Ethiopian people wear.

Flower Pendant

This is a flower pendant that I made in 1st year.
It is sterling silver with a brass center.
I embossed lace onto the silver in order to get the texture on the petals.
